In the more than 170 years since our establishment, we have expanded business by using technologies cultivated through shipbuilding. To date, we have launched four fields of business: Resources, Energy & Environment; Social Infrastructure; Industrial Systems & General-Purpose Machinery; and Aero Engine, Space & Defense.
Aero Engine, Space & Defense business area’s projects include work in the fields of aircraft engines, rocket systems, outer space utilization, and defense equipment systems. As a leading aircraft engine company, we help support the air transport industry, while in the space field we work on developing and producing turbopumps found at the heart of rocket engines, and have worked on next generation rockets such as Epsilon. With demand for aircraft expected to double in the next 20 years, we are working with new materials to develop lighter, quieter engines in order to reduce environmental impact.
At this exhibition, IHI will introduce our research and development of advanced power modules aimed at extending the range and increasing the payload capacity of next-generation air mobility vehicles, including flying cars and eVTOLs. Additionally, IHI Transport Machinery will present our studies on takeoff and landing sites for flying cars.

Gas Turbine Hybrid Power Module for eVTOL

We are exploring new possibilities for long-range, high-capacity transportation with eVTOL. Currently, power modules rely on batteries, which impose significant limitations on flight distance and payload capacity. To break through these barriers, we have begun developing a gas turbine hybrid power module, aiming to achieve transportation of 1,000 kg over distances of 1,000 km. Our proposed powerpack consists of a gas turbine, power generation motor, AC/DC converter, and control unit. Jet fuel will be used initially, with Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF) envisioned for the future. By integrating IHI’s cutting-edge technologies in aircraft engines, turbomachinery, and power generation systems, we are driving the next revolution in aerial mobility.

Vertiports for eVTOL Aircraft

Effectively utilizing urban spaces to create mobility hubs that connect air and ground transportation, IHI Transport Machinery provides vertiports for the social implementation of eVTOL aircraft. We offer optimal configurations tailored to installation location, number of operational aircraft, and landing/takeoff frequency. Various technologies developed and commercialized by the IHI Group are applied to deliver services within vertiport facilities, including charging, aircraft storage, aircraft transport, and maintenance.
